Vomiting

Jessie is a 10 year old Lab cross that belongs to one of my assistants. Came in with a history of acute vomiting. The owners report that he vomited up “something” the owners said looked like the inner lining of the stomach. I am not certain it was not something he got into recently. There has been some weight loss.

Labs are pending.

X-rays were done and were equivocal. My associate asked me to do an ultrasound.

This was one of the hardest I have done for many reasons. Jesse should have been sedated and most of her abdominal organs were intercostal and difficult to immage. I am posting 4 cines of the stomach for your feedback.

In the meantime we are treating him with Pepcid, Cerenia, Sucralfate and diet.

Large amount of gas without any clean shadowing and wall looks normal. Think acute gastritis – toxins, dietary indiscretion but foreign body always possible. See response to treatment and would repeat the US in 12-24 hours.

    Hi Randy,

Nice posts.  I performed an abdominal US on a semi-cooperative 110lb obese lab yesterday who also needed his stomach evaluated.  I scanned him in a V-trough on the floor which eliminated the battle of keeping him on the table.  You probably do this, too, but I also like to scan the stomach again with the patient standing just to increase my chances of finding something (and to better reassure myself that there is nothing there).
