pleural effusion- cardiac, or not?

-8 year old F/S DSH

-not eating , lethargic 2-3 weeks 

-no murmur or arrythmia 

-mild to moderate pleural effusion 

-bloodwork mild hypoproteinemia, mild leukocytosis, else nsf 

– Just hoping my echo images are enough to call cardiac versus not. I  am saying not. Thanks

  1. Does not look like cardiac disease. Have you looked at the pleural effusion ? Consider scanning the cranial aspect of the thorax as there could be a mass there.

  2. la/ao < 1.3 in the presence of pleural effusion in cats or cough (in dogs) means non carduogenic in my book. Your la/ao here is about 1.1. Yes as remo said check the cranial mediastinum but also always scan the abdomen in these normal la/ao cases lookign for a primary neoplasm…lsa or panc carcinoma come up frequently in these scenarios.

  3. Thank you for the guidelines. The pleural effusion cytology came back as neoplastic, cand there was definitely something going on in the abdomen…I will try to post those images at some point, so that I can know if I’m on the right page with my interpretation –  cat was euthanized.
