Why my MR velocity is not making sense


A 4-year-old male BSH cat was presented for echo. HCM phenostype with SAM was diagnosed. There was MR jet and LVOT obstruction. The MR jet velocity measured approximatel 3m/sec with PG of 25mmHg. My question is that why this MR velocity jet is not making sense. The cat has SAM, which means that the LV pressure should be more than 120mmHg and the PG between the LV and LA should be more than 120mmHg, which means that the MR jet velocity should be more than what was measured in this case. I do face this problem frequently. How it can be fixed?

  1. The signal is attenuating. You can lower the frequency on the p10 probe, minimize your field of view (FOV) and diminish overall depth. The p10 probe is a pretty delicate high prequency probe and makes pretty images but tends to underestimate velocities in the far field so if all these maneuvers don’t work then just use the sp5 low frequency probe for the mr and lvot velociities and then they wont be underestimated but the rest of the scan will be prettiest you can make it with the p10. on GE machines for example. same thing happens wiht the 6s probe for cardiac in dogs over 15-20# and MR jets. They are underetsimated all the time owing to inadequate acoustic penetration.
