Thyroid carcinoma.
Cytology findings interpreted by L.D. McGill, DVM, Ph.D., Diplomate, ACVP Medical Director and Veterinary Pathologist Animal Reference Pathology: “Observations: Submitted are excellent images of excellent collections of cells from the thyroid gland region. These cells are characteristic rounded cells with rounded uniform nuclei. Where clumped and individualized, the cells have bluish gray cytoplasm. The cytoplasm is slightly varied. Commonly the nuclei are not varied and in this collection the nuclei are rather uniform. This is a characteristic cellularity. Interpretation: Thyroid carcinoma. Comments: This is characteristic fine needle aspirate cellularity from a thyroid carcinoma in the dog. The cells are uniform and characteristic. These lesions can be difficult to completely excise particularly if closely attached to the larynx. When completely excised, these growths may not cause any further problems unless they already metastasized. Further confirmation of the extent of the growth can be undertaken prior to surgical intervention.” After Biggs received his diagnosis he was placed in a loving foster home and is being provided the medical treatment needed to manage his disease. We hope for the best outcome for this very sweet and lovable boy.
