Cardiac scan of puppy

I have been asked to do an echocardiogram on a 9week old, 3 lb Sheltie puppy who has a heart murmur. There is a history of PDA’s in the breeding kennel. I have not seen a case myself but have reviewed what to look for. I am more concerned about scannning a patient this small. Any hints on doing this? Sedation?

If I suspect a PDA, I will be referring to a cardiologist. At what age would surgery be considered if deemed a candidate?

  1. Use torbutrol 0.2mg/kg IV for

    Use torbutrol 0.2mg/kg IV for sedation.  For PDA look for continous reverse flow in Pulmonary Artery on PW/CW Doppler.  PDA can actually be found ventral cranial Llax, takes a little work and a quiet puppy. Surgery is dependent on whether LV failure is emerging  for most left to right shunts.send images to Sonopath they have some good cardiologist working for them

    The butorphanol worked great in this patient. I have inserted a video of the PDA. Owner is going to a cardiologist for closure options.
