History

An 11-year-old SF mixed breed dog was presented for a routine dental. Physical examination and CBC were both normal. Abnormalities on serum biochemistry were elevated ALT (1000), ALP (1281), and GGT (53) activity.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

Liver – nodular regeneration, vacuolar hepatopathy, reactive hepatopathy, neoplasia, chronic-active hepatitis, cirrhosis
Gall bladder – mucocele, cholecystitis
Cushing’s disease

DX

Mucocele

Sampling

None

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Gallbladder mucocele with cholecystitis. Chronic and active inflammatory hepatopathy. Cholecystectomy and liver biopsy are recommended.

Image Interpretation

The liver in this patient presented diffusely increased portal markings and remodeling. The gallbladder presented an echogenic wall with suspended, striating debris and kiwi type appearance. This is consistent with chronic cholecystitis and mucocele formation. The common bile duct did not appear affected. Cholecystectomy and liver biopsy would be recommended.

Outcome

None
