Fluid-absorbing intestinal foreign body in a 7 year old FS Jack Russell Terrier

History

A 7-year-old spayed female Jack Russell Terrier dog presented for persistent vomiting of ingesta (steak) followed by clear, foamy fluid overnight after the owner fed the dog from the table after a barbecue. The physical exam revealed tacky mucous membranes, 5-7% dehydration, weakness, and a tense abdomen. The CBC demonstrated a moderately elevated hematocrit but was otherwise normal. Blood chemistry revealed slightly elevated ALT, slightly elevated total bilirubin and slightly elevated glucose. A urinalysis was not performed.

The patient was stabilized in hospital with IV fluid support for 48 hours prior to the sonogram. Vomiting was occasional at that point. A food trial had not yet been performed.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

Gastritis, GI foreign body/obstruction, dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, cholecystitis/mucocele, neoplasia

DX

Intestinal foreign body

Sampling

Enterotomy removed a corn cob lodged in the mid-descending duodenum.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Intestinal foreign body, partially obstructive.

Image Interpretation

A progressively shadowing luminal small intestinal structure is evident with serrated edges. Minimal luminal stasis is noted prior to the structure suggestive for a foreign body obstruction with fluid absorbing properties.

Outcome

The patient recovered uneventfully.
