Effects of xylazine on scan

Hi all 

I scanned a 5 year old FS border collie today due to chronic “vomiting,” which ended up being regurgitation due to megaesophagus. Besides a tremendously gas distended stomach and skinny adrenals, she had a fairly normal abdomen. I did notice an increase in the prominence of the portal vasculature, but I was wondering if this could be due to xylazine sedation. She had been sedated and immediately regurged large volumes and had to be reversed with yohimbine. However, she was still quite sedate through the course of the scan.

I did notice an increase in the prominence of the portal vasculature, but I was wondering if this could be due to xylazine sedation. Also, I’m wondering if we are seeing a bit of a “shower curtain” effect in these lungs or if this is just artifact. Besides the megaesophagus, the dog’s chest rads looked fairly normal. 

I am recommending baseline cortisol, anti-AChR antibody titre, etc for the megaesophagus. Any thoughts about this liver or lungs?

    The prominence of the portal vasculature can be ascribed to the xylazine. With mega-esophagus consider chronic low-grade aspiration pneumonia as a cause for the “shower curtain” effect.

  3. I agree and dexdomitor does

    I agree and dexdomitor does this very much in fact I dont sample livers readily withe either because they can ooze ro I will just fna. When sampling livers I use propofol or ket/val if old school.

    R/O Addison’s , it can cause a reversible megaesophagus

  11. FYI Xylazine is no longer

    FYI Xylazine is no longer recommended by Plumb for small animal use.Could be an issue for state/provincial board if the patient had a adverse reaction and a liability in the States
