Question Dr Peter E:A wave

I just finished watching the 5-min with sonopath video of Dr Peter explaining the significance of measuring the mitral inflow profile. I have the following questions:

1. A dog with cough. LA is enlarged but the E wave is less than 1.4m/sec. So the cough is cardiogenic or non cardiogenic or just the enlarged LA is enough yo classify the  cough as cardiogenic

2. What is the significance of measuring mitral inflow values in feline cardiac patients. Most have HR >180 and as mentioned by Dr Peter, measurement of E and A waves will not make sense with a HR>180bpm

Many thanks for the video. It was really amazing as always

  1. HI!

    Sorry for the delayed response…

    1) Yes, if the E-wave is <1.4 m/s then CHF is extremely unlikely

    2) Difficult question: The absolute E-wave amplitude does not really play a role in felines, it’s the E/A ratio which is difficult to get at high heart rates. Yet, in unclear cases at heart rates of <180/min they can add to the big picture: e.g. breeding exam, a bit equivocal based on thicknesses. I also use TDI in these cases.

I wish you a happy New Year!

    Regards,

    Peter

  2. Thanks for the reply Peter. What I get is that if that even with an enlarged LA, with E:A <1.4, the cough will not be classified as cardiogenic. Is it correct?
