Vitamin D Toxicosis

Internal medicine question. No x-rays or ultrasound images.

Young 4 year old Porty on Nutrix food that was just recalled for to much Vitamin D in the food.

The profile was normal in this dog including the calcium, ionized calcium and PTH.

The Vitamin D level was around 1500- very elevated.

My ?- is there anything I can do to lower the Vit D level besides getting the dog off the diet?

Cholestyromine has been used in people- but it can have side effects too. Maybe we just have to wait it out.

Make sure none of your clients are on that diet.

  1. If the phosphorous was

If the phosphorous was normal, I would change the diet and wait it out. Cholestyromine is generally used for large exposure as with cholecalciferol ingestion I believe.

    Remo may have other ideas:)

  2. As calcium and phosphate is

As calcium and phosphate is normal would change diet but monitor serum calcium.

  3. That is what I was planning

That is what I was planning on doing. Thanks to you both.
